Diabetology

Diabetology is the clinical science of diabetes mellitus, its diagnosis, treatment and follow-up. It can be considered a specialised field of endocrinology.


The term diabetologist refers to any physician, including endocrinologists, whose practice and/or research efforts are concentrated mainly in diabetes care.


Apart from regulating medication (e.g. insulin) dosage and timing, a diabetologist will also concern themselves with the potential consequences of diabetes.

e.g. retinopathy, nephropathy and peripheral neuropathy.


AMC Diabetes care clinic is headed by Dr.Shasikala (Diabetologist)having vast experience in the field of diabetes and weight management. Diabetes Education Services at the AMC provides high quality group and individual education for individuals with diabetes; those who just want some additional information about diabetes; or those looking for nutritional education for weight loss, high cholesterol, or a healthy heart. All of our educators are Certified Diabetes Educators (Nurses, Pharmacist and Dietitians who meet strict guidelines and so that they are current with all the new aspects of diabetes care).

Basic Class : Mondays and Wednesdays from 9:00 a.m. - 11:00 a.m. Tuesdays from 3:00 p.m. - 5:00 p.m

The Diabetes Care in AMC Centre provides comprehensive health education and counseling to adults and children with diabetes and their families. Our Diabetes Clinic specializes in helping women obtain glucose control before conception, during pregnancy and after delivery to have healthy outcomes for both mom and baby. Controlling glucose levels reduces the risk of complications that women with diabetes can encounter. Our team is a multidisciplinary team consisting of Diabetologist, Diabetes Educators, Dietitians and Clinical Pharmacist. As diabetes is a lifelong disease and learning only occurs when the learner is ready, our programs are designed to identify the best learning approach per individual. Ongoing follow-up is encouraged for all people with diabetes.

AMC provides patients with comprehensive multi-disciplinary care for diabetes and endocrine disorders in both the inpatient and outpatient setting. Joint specialty programs include cardiovascular disease, eye care, pregnancy, the care of the foot and obesity management.

Sequenced diabetes education

Our expertly trained, nationally certified diabetes educators include diabetes nurse educators, registered dietitians and exercise physiologists. You can see these specialists one-on-one, or get the information and motivation you need through a variety of programs and classes. Our educators work together as part of your diabetes care team to provide coordinated, sequenced learning activities.
